Why on earth would you pay £100 for this?
Aaaaand my offer of 80£ was accepted! A kidney and a liver to be sacrificed, luckly I've got to spare.
Thanks for the scouting, will stick to this forum in the future! =)
Is it a first impression?

Nope. This isn't the same auction.

Yep it was, I ask the seller about the copyright page
I bought a new third impression from retail in 2017, so I am guessing that's how many impressions were ever released as they dried up soon after. Anyone have a higher impression than that?
(My copy was $32 at the time I bought it). As these are useful books, and HarperCollins has informally said that they don't see much use in publishing books like this any more with TolkienGateway and similar sites so accesible, I can see that fine condition copies (any impression) will be in demand for the forseeable future.
I agree that patience will be rewarded long term. I don't see these drying up completely, there should be copies here and there available on eBay and similar.

The first edition is available for peanuts so that argument doesn't really follow.
I'm not sure what argument you are taking issue with? That these are in demand? That patience will be rewarded?

That this is not the original edition that contains the "useful information" that you cite as part of the appeal of this book. Why not collect the original edition? It's better value for money.
Ah, I see.
This edition of the book has very nice reproductions of fifty of Ted's illustrations, many of which aren't published elsewhere in book form, thus the specific interest from collectors.
The information (both text and images) are available online for free, thus HC are indicating (at this time) no interest in trying to print more physical books, so people interested in books with either the text or the images have only the secondary market available - if they want the text, they have many choices, if they want the illustrations, just this edition will do.
