Anyone know if there is a similar phenomenon with regards to the 82 silmarillion?
Never seen such a thing. I've noticed the duality of the Hobbits for years, though I've not noted down the numbers to come up with any theory. Maybe they just had two lots of leather and sometimes pulled from one lot versus the other or maybe there was no specific order the books were pulled from the pile after being bound, so the numbers have no correlation with the order of being bound.
Makes for three variants to collect, though (possibly four)....

The Blue Wizards is my absolute favourite Nasmith painting. I'd love one of those, but the £300 is just a tad too much for me (I think I'd manage £250!)
Some recent acquisitions, thanks everyone for your advice.
- Ancrene Wisse (1962), unexpectedly with its glassine dustwrapper (not stated by the seller, nor included in the photos he sent me... therefore, a welcome surprise!)
- Hammond's A Descriptive Bibliography (4th printing, 2012), a book that I have been looking for for a long time - thanks Emilien!
- The Hobbit (Folio edition, 1st printing 1997) - too bad for that spine

I think my Hobbit Folio spine is more faded, it is a great shame as nothing you can do.
Yeah, mine is similarly faded. Don't think they are especially robust in this regard.

Do the related Folio Silmarillion and The Lord of the Rings fade, too?

Can't speak to the LoTR as I never felt compelled to buy it, but my 1st print Folio Sil does not have any fading.
