Thanks for the engaging video!

I didn’t catch this mentioned, but the standalone Gawain (with E.V. Gordon) is the critical edition, i.e., it is the original Middle English text. Whereas Gawain, Pearl, & Orfeo (ed. Christopher) contains Tolkien’s translation into Modern English. Both books are still in print, for this reason.

The original U.S. hardcover of Gawain, Pearl, & Orfeo has an absolutely hideous jacket, but HMC made up for it with their first paperback with lovely cover art by Pauline Baynes. I regret this art never made it onto a hardcover—perhaps in a set matching the 70s Bombadil/Farmer/Smith. Strange the U.K. never got it at all.

I also quite like the John Howe art from 1975. Again sadly paperback-only.

Actually the art I have been recently wowed by is the present Ballantine MMPs, with art by Michael James Bowman. His Gawain is quite good, but I am more impressed by his HoMe/Sil/UT pieces.

Hi Ulmo,

Have you purchased these? I was looking for the Smith Wootton/Farmer Giles - but can't seem to find it online.

Smith Wootton/Farmer Giles has been announced as available, but I think it is difficult to actually find copies to buy with the new cover.

Nevertheless your guess is as good as mine whether they have the old cover or the new cover actually in stock. Same with Amazon or other sites which still show the old cover. Same ISBN, obvs.

Thanks Ulmo. I will wait until I am sure that it is the new cover.
