The book itself has a map of Numenor and one of Middle-earth at the end of the Third Age and is composed of the Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-earth, Lord of the Rings, volumes of the History of Middle-earth and other sources.

It starts with an excerpt from "The Council of Elrond" when Elrond spoke about Sauron and the Rings. Finally, a preface as well as an introduction. It starts chronologically, in year 1 of the Second Age with the founding of the Grey Havens and Lindon and ends with the defeat of Sauron and the end of the Second Age.

The appendices consist of a short chronicle of the Third Age, the Numenoric chapter of "The Lost Road", as well as notes, bibliography and acknowledgements.
