So am I right in thinking that the only new, or exclusive item in the deluxe is the coloured map of Numenor? I thought I saw an image of it here but can't see it now.
It's not exclusive as the colour version is also included in the new Silmarillion illustrated by Tolkien (see my pictures in the dedicated thread). Unless the 2 are different but highly doubt it.onthetrail wrote:

Thank you emilien, I am getting mixed up between the two books. Thanks for pointing me back to the correct book.

You are not wrong or mixed-up between the two so much
I think Harpercollins made a mistake by stating (on the blurb of FoN deluxe edition) that the colour version of the map of Numenor is exclusive to this edition, although we can see the same coloured map on the new Silmarillion also. At least, they should have write this on the Silmarillion deluxe blurb as well ! So this new map is exclusive to both editions...

Ahha, that is where my confusion comes from. I knew it had to be HarperCollins fault somewhere Thanks emilien.
Unfortunately, the illustrations do not look like this in the book, at least in the trade edition.
Maybe people who already have the deluxe can confirm if the illustrations are printed on glossy paper or not?

Even this image is terrible compared the artwork Alan Lee produced. I have the FoN images in very high resolution and they are astonishing.
I also have the digital files for the other Alan Lee illustrations and with as much respect to HarperCollins as is possible to give... I offer them none. Their reproductions of his artwork are a travesty to his skills. The recent Folio was much closer though.

Haven't seen either the trade or the deluxe of FoN yet, but am not surprised based on HC releases over the recent past with image reproduction. onthetrail is right about the Folio LOTR from this year. HC should take a hint from Folio about what they did with Lee's artwork. Even if it drives the cost of book up a little bit.
