Tolkien Collector's Guide Season 1 Episode 19

The team sits down to talk about Easton Press, who have been producing leather special editions of Tolkien's books in the USA since 1984. Their books are well crafted and there is an active collector's market for them, though they certainly do have their quirks!

Watched your video around 5am this morning. Keep 'em coming fellas.

I never intended to collect EP, but found a trilogy set cheap online around Easter, and me being me... it has snowballed.

I don't mind the non-uniformity; deciding which titles to place together creates a style thats relatively nice on the eye. As they are expensive books, it gives some character to each volume (noting the rehashed runes between the main volumes).

I'd be interested to find a list of all tolkien related titles they have produced over the years.

Very nice line-up Rob ! They look amazing
They look like books in a medieval monastery library, made at different times, written and built by different monks... love it !

Thank you for the video btw, which is great as usual !

Nice episode indeed, thank you. I was wondering (and apologies if I missed this) but does EP also add bespoke artwork in each book - like FS does?

If so, I’d love to see some pics.

For some reason I have never been drawn to EP - but then again I have never bought one yet..

The Hobbit and LOTR and UT/BOLT have colored frontispieces found only in EP books. But the rest are the trade sheets of whatever published volume you are ordering.

Here are pics of what I believe to be a complete set of Tolkien & Tolkien Related Easton Press Titles. Note: There are 2 Hobbits (of different sizes). And the "Fall of Arthur" bound in Red. Green version not in pics.

There are also 2 copies of "The Art of the Lord of the Rings" in the photos.

If anyone knows of any other edition, please post.

[Edit: Changing last photo to add "An Encyclopedia of Tolkien" - Had forgotten to put on shelf]

[Edit2: Changing last photo to add "Beowulf" and "Fall of Gondolin" - Had on another shelf - This should now be complete list]

Looks like a full set !
I am genuinely curious though why many of them still have the shrink-wrap on ?

Great Video !
I am slowly building an Easton collection - i have 20 volumes for now.
I do love how they look on the shelf - and do not mind the different sizes i feel it gives them a more librarish feel - my only niggle would be the dwarvish Rhune that is replicated on so many spines and feels a bit lazy.
I take my time and only buy directly from Easton - as the prices on the secondary market are just silly - in fact Ebay has many Easton Tolkien that are still IN STOCK @ Easton, at double the price or more - maybe taking advantage of people outside USA who don't know how to use a Forwarding Service which works perfectly for me.
I notice they have just done The Nature of Middle Earth.
Keep the great Videos coming!

Yeah. They are all shrink-wrapped other than the larger Hobbit.

No good answer to your question really. Just like them that way - as close to "as originally issued". I suppose each collector has their own preferences.
