eagerly awaiting my copy of the book here in France but would be very interested to see Alan Lee's (glorious!) artwork in high quality, all that I have found was the medium/low resolution images here...

The little silhouette on the right side is Sauron, according to Brian Sibley itself on the TolkCast.
The map of numenor is colored by Nicolette Caven. Mildly interesting that she's gone from redrawing Tolkien's color illustrations in black and white (in The Hobbit), to redrawing Tolkien's black and white illustrations in color.
I was seeing “images in the sky”, figuratively speaking…
At the top right where the wave is cresting over Numenor, I thought the foam resembled a huge figure reaching out an arm over the island. It reminded me of one of Tolkien’s illustrations of Sauron’s outstretched arm.
