After looking at mine I really don’t think it’s rubbed off, but is it in fact the texture of the leather not fully taking the gilt well?
Your copy looks way, way better than mine.
Kind of random question, but does anyone have these “Illustrated by the Author” editions and also the red slipcase editions of A Song of Ice and Fire (Harper Voyager)? Would be interested to see them side by side.
Just bought a second copy of UK Unfinished Tales (1st/1st) for £35 but this time without the faded blue. I wonder if in 45 years people will be looking to buy an un-rubbed 2022 Silmarillion deluxe on ebay

Wow, that's a real shame dunedain. Four faulty copies...HC really need to take a good long look in the new year with who they are using to print their books. Starting with the History of the Hobbit release in February...although those are probably already at the printers.
wow , got mine from amazon, it was well packed. I got my Fall of Númenor deluxe direct from HC with the 30% discount, also well packed in good condition, no funny business or complaints
I am so nervous for my copies coming in the mail. My LoTR deluxe has the green tinted crease with varying ink issues and multiple colored pages. My "unfinished tales" and "guide to middle earth" also have varying page color, misaligned print, etc. All 3 books are printed by Rotolio. I've ordered 2 Silmarillions... hopefully ONE of them turns out
Out of the box my copy was perfect from the outside. After beginning to read it for 30-ish minutes, I noticed that the interior crease had a GREEN hue to it, and that the pages were inconsistent colors ranging from white, to cream to gray to blue. And then when I closed the book and put it back, I realized that my CLEAN DRY HAND had almost completely removed the silver lettering on the spine from where I was holding it. What the actual **** HC I have owned this book for LESS THAN AN HOUR.
