Is it just me or does that seem like a lot for a second edition set? These prices have seemed so high lately.

That first American edition set on eBay of LotR sold for just short of $5k. That also seemed quite high IMO especially considering the condition they were in (large bookplates).

The 1st printing of the 2nd US edition is quite uncommon, especially in this condition. The slipcase is missing though.

The 1st printing of the 2nd US edition is quite uncommon, especially in this condition. The slipcase is missing though.

The books are in great shape as Emilien pointed out. However the missing slipcase is a big drawback IMO. I paid less for my set of 1st prints with the case not too long ago. So, yes I think this buyer might have overpaid, but only slightly considering the present market.

I was watching that 1st Ed. set as well Jlong, I actually thought it would go for a little more than it did, but considering the condition as you pointed out, I think that might be about right given market conditions. A 1st print HMCO FOTR sold for over 3K the other day on eBay.

Regarding the 1st print HMCO sold for 3K, I'm even wondering why it didn't go for more, regarding the current market. If it has been a 1st UK, it would have gone for more than 3K. I'm still wondering why the 1st US edition aren't worth more than the UK counterparts, especially as they were printed in lesser quantities.

Whilst US 1st edition is more rare.. as a collector I put a higher value on the UK 1st … it is more desirable for obvious reasons I would think… hence it makes sense to me that the UK edition commands higher prices
