Oh yes, I agree! I just thought it would be interesting to have two 41st printings, but with different covers. ?

Yes indeed!

Here is another book club Hobbit - oddly it is included in a Ballantine Boxset which was not book club issued (as far as I know) - maybe The Hobbit was replaced - or maybe not....

That's four now in the past few days of hunting...so maybe not as uncommon as I(we) previously thought. Thanks remy for showing us your copy

That is interesting. It is a little unclear how this Book Club Hobbit was distributed. I quickly skimmed Wayne Hammond’s bibliography and didn’t see the Book Club mentioned in the passage outlining the change in covers.

Also, I recalled there were some minor textual differences within the Remington printings so the 41st could have some text deltas to an earlier printing. I re-found the TCG thread discussing this (which you may remember):

I too am wondering how they got distributed, could be that it wasn't so special and was thrown in with the other Ballantine copies, or as remy suggested that this is a later addition.

The only textual difference between the first and forty-first Ballantine Hobbit is the reset plate for page 21, which appeared with the twenty-fifth. The rest of the text is identical between the first and forty-first. The quickest tell is found at page 21 line 8: 'odd-looking' in the older printings, and 'old-looking' in the newer printings.

Thanks oxonianus for the summary. I was misremembering the number of changes. One correction is very minor over all those printings.

Congrats Lance. I had a feeling you were determined to get a 41st Remington (despite my best efforts to dissuade you!).
