First edition? Lord of the Rings set

My dad recently passed and while going through his things, I found this set of Lord of the Rings. I was hoping to find someone who might be able to give me a ballpark figure of what these are worth. I don't plan on selling, because they meant a lot to my dad, but I'd like to know.

Sorry some of the pictures are a bit fuzzy! If needed/wanted, I can get clearer images.

So only Fellowship has the dust jacket, and it's in pretty bad shape, but otherwise the books all seem really good. The maps are great (Fellowship's map does have 2 small tears, but the other two maps seemed perfect).

Can you post some pictures of the copyright page for each volume? It is on the back of the Title Page and will usually contain something like Printed in Great Britain or xxxx Printing on it. I'm sure one of our members can identify the editions and give you a rough price for them.

Finally, if you plan to keep them, you can get 'facsimile' dust-jackets which would make them look nice on your bookshelf, though they do not add any value to the books.

I'm pretty certain your:
Fellowship of the Ring is an 8th printing from 1959
Two Towers is obviously a 7th printing from 1960
Return of the King is a 5th printing from 1959

FOTR would be the most valuable of the three because it still has it's jacket, I would put a value of about $300

TT and ROTK are missing their jackets and that significantly lowers the value unfortunately. I'd value both at about $100 each. ROTK perhaps slightly more as the 4th and 5th printings are not easy to come by.

You'll want to get that FOTR jacket into some mylar ASAP. Those HMCO 1st Ed. LOTR jackets are very easily damaged.

Or buy a facsimile dust-jacket and take off the original jacket and make sure that it is laid flat, so that it does not get damaged.

If you go the facsimile dust jacket route, I've used DustJacket-dot-com before, and Mark the owner does it with his son. They are beyond awesome for customer communication and quality. They take care of you really well, and the dust jackets are a steal at $25.

I have a full set of the facsimile dust jackets for the 1st UK editions and they're flawless. And they come pre-wrapped in Mylar. Here's a link to all of his tolkien products:
