Today Julia Golding is joined by Matt Fox, creator of the Magic of Middle Earth(sic) exhibition currently showing at the Willis Museum, Basingstoke, Hampshire, open until 16 October. Matt's an avid collector of Tolkien-related artifacts. Hear about his huge collection, from artworks to bigatures, how he has recreated the Battle for Helm's Deep, and the chance for you to channel your inner hobbit for a selfie on his bar stool. We discuss what collecting has taught Matt about Tolkien and why is this is different from the world of sci-fi memorabilia collecting. What's the most collectible Tolkien toy prior to the Peter Jackson films? And in the most surprising turn in the conversation, find out about Smaug's missing legs! The exhibition is due to go on tour.
This exhibition has been at a few locations in the UK and is now going to be in Barnsley Town Hall runs from 30 September 2023 to April 2024.

Interesting to see the John Howe 'Stormcrow' Gandalf painting on the wall. Surely not the original? Someone should let JH know if it is. I suspect it is a print though, the Hildebrandt Smaug certainly is. If Ted Nasmith's 'Luthien' is the original - then just 'wow' from me!
Looks like a fun exhibition anyway. Thanks for posting.

I finally got a chance to check this out, thanks Trotter. Mostly seems focused on movie and other adaptations though there are some first edition books and items from Tolkien's library. I understand why places don't do this (increased cost and more work, perhaps lower actual attendance) but it would be really cool if future Tolkien exhibitions could prepare these virtual tours to go live after the exhibitions close. These exhibitions are really unique experiences and many folks simply can't afford to make it to Oxford or New York or Marquette but would love a chance to see these things, even virtually.
