In short: I see these as fantastic gifts to get someone new to Tolkien, would like something nicer than a paperback (without spending hardback prices) for example. Of course, who am I to tell fellow Tolkien collectors how to use their books?!
I agree, I think that is the market these are being produced for, and I think the cover artwork is different, and I really like it
The 2013 box is billed as the ‘collectors’ set, whereas I believe these 2022 books never have been. So I never once thought they’d come out again in a box. Now they have the Silmarillion soon to be out, I can’t see them ever being in a box again. It doesn’t bother me though as I like these on their own.
I absolutely love this cover design. Probably won't be buying this one, as I don't have the others that match and don't really have an intent to buy them, but definitely tempted just to get that design with the Trees. It's a way better design than the other 4 covers in my opinion.
I've been thinking about a tattoo (we'll my wife and daughters want me to get one) and this cover design is a contender. It's beautiful and represents a lot of elements in my life.
Sweet design. But to me these 2022 editions are just a sad reminder that I missed out on the 2013 collectors set. It's almost as if they were selling photos of it. If they made real clothbound versions of all five now and threw them in a box I'd be willing to make room on my shelf and throw some serious money at them.

If you really want to throw money at them . . .
