How durable are the Folio Society books?

Hello, everyone!
I've been doing some research into the Folio Society edition but couldn't find anything in regards to the books' durability. I really like the design and the illustrations, but I am quite a bit worried about how they will hold up in the long run. I don't plan on having them as reading copies, mind you, and would only take them off the shelf occasionally.
My main concern is with the gilt used for decorating the swirl patterns and the details in and around the centerpieces. I've seen some pictures where they have been rubbed off. Is the foil prone to flaking or have the books just been poorly handled? I know their spines are susceptible to sun fading, but avoiding such exposure is sound advice for all books anyway, so not that big of a deal.
So, am I justified in my concerns? Is there anything else you think I should know?
Thanks in advance!

I think you are probably asking the wrong audience this question, as most of us look after our books and in a lot of cases have 'reading copies'.

No damage to mine, but I very rarely look at them. The Hobbit spine was badly faded when I got it.

You won't find more durable books than FS,even the standard editions like the LOTRs pictured. The fundamental structures of the books are built like tanks with good quality acid free paper and excellent printing which is to be expected as they are not cheap. How they are handled with regard to gilt and foil etc is another matter. They are excellent books to buy in the second hand market if the price is right.

That is good to hear, that the books are quite durable structure-wise. I was a bit afraid the vegetable parchment binding could be somewhat fragile compared to something like cloth or buckram, two materials that FS regularly uses for other books. Is it not an issue?
I would, however, still like to preserve the book's foil: the design is far too pretty not to be cared for. Does it hold up over time if the books are handled with care?

Yes. Here are photos of mine from 1997 (so 27 years later)...

Can't see any fading. If there is any, I cannot see it in "real-life". Think it is just the camera....

A photo from another angle....

[Edit add]

But this edition (and especially the Hobbit) is prone to fading in sunlight.......

What I wonder about first off is whether a book has pages in sewn signatures or not.

Wow, Remy! I guess that is proof enough. Thanks for the pictures!
