I was SURE that the next variation would be a standard hardcover of the Author-Illustrated edition, but divided into 3 parts, possibly boxed with a newer version of the Companion.

But this one is not illustrated by the Author. It's illustrated by Alan Lee.
It’s not a re-release of the ‘92 set, though: it’s new.

It depends on your definition of new, a very similar edition has been published twice before, once in 1992 and more recently by the Folio Society, though both of those were limited editions and this is not.
