Agree with Trotter. There was no luck or getting wise involved. There were QC issues at a printer that HC contracted, combined with Covid and other things. HarperCollins addressed those as any business would.

Tentatively excited by this one. Will really come down to the image reproduction, and I suspect for practical bookbinding reasons, this is likely to be on a par with recent releases. Always possible they will take the 1992 route and manage to insert plates on proper illustration paper (the last AL 3 volume set to do so), but I'm not sure if the current illustration count/position allows for that (though they could move things around). Obviously Folio got around this by using tipped in plates, but that is clearly not going to happen here. Assuming the leather/cloth colours are similar to the mockup, seems like it will be an attractive edition (the Author Illustrated editions were a bit "in your face" for me with the bold colours mixed with black).

I tend to think a publisher is guilty till proven innocent as regards binding, with pages as sewn signatures, no bleedthrough of print, etc. This seems like a lot of money to pay, otherwise, for a book with familiar artwork plus some new sketches. And is this the best text possible?

I sincerely doubt that. $1000 for a limited FS deluxe beats $250 for HC mass produced set easily imho. A Folio Society deluxe is just book as an art in itself.
