Were there multiple variations of the Tolkien Library boxed set? I thought it was supposed to be a 5-book set with the hobbit?

Assuming you are referring to the 1978 set, yes - The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, FoTR, TT and RotK. Only one state of the set that I am aware of. Certainly nothing with different books.

Edit: Looking at the post further up - that set is just something someone has cobbled together. Worth buying for the box, potentially. The books are pretty much worthless in that condition.
