I think it has taken far too long, but finally you can pre-order the Hobbit in the Welsh language.

Yr Hobyd.webp

Mewn twll yn y ddaear trigai hobyd...

Bilbo Baglan is a hobyd who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely travelling further than the pantry of his hobyd-hole in Pen-y-Bag. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard, Gandalff, and a company of thirteen dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on a journey 'there and back again'. They have a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smawg, a large and very dangerous dragon...

Melin Bapur books is proud to present Yr Hobyd, a Welsh translation of The Hobbit, J.R.R. Tolkien's classic fantasy story of heroism, dragons, magic and burglary. This is the first publication of any work by J.R.R. Tolkien in the Welsh language, and the translation by Adam Pearce, who has previously translated H.G. Wells into Welsh and works by T. Gwynn Jones and Daniel Owen from Welsh into English, has been prepared in accordance with J.R.R. Tolkien's own instructions for translators of his work and officially licenced by the Tolkien Estate.

Included are J.R.R. Tolkien's original illustrations and new Welsh versions of the two maps featured in the original novel.

I don't know if Morfydd Clark would do an audiobook, but it would make her mum extremely proud if she got to record this ('twas her mum that really impressed on her, as a kid, that 'Elvish' was based on Welsh). Also, in my estimation she does have a very pleasant voice to listen to, even though the Welsh would be lost on me, despite my distant heritage.

Might a Welsh LOTR be in the works?

It is interesting they used a Welsh rune system popular in the 19th century: https://nation.cymru/culture/yr-hobyd- ... to-be-published-in-welsh/ https://www.omniglot.com/conscripts/coelbren.htm

Editor of Melin Bapur Adam Pearce, who also translated the book, explains: “We knew this would probably be a popular book, but the response has been absolutely overwhelming so far.

“We’ve sold almost six hundred copies in just about a month, which is remarkable for a book only available to pre-order on our website, in a language with only about six hundred thousand speakers – it’s yet to hit the shelves of a single bookshop for example, we haven’t spent a penny on advertising, and it’s not yet available on Amazon.

“It will be interesting to see how it fares over the rest of the year but it wouldn’t be any kind of surprise at this stage if this turns out to be the best-selling book in Welsh of 2024.”

One part of the book’s success has been the interest from Tolkien collectors all over the world, including many that don’t speak Welsh.

“We’ve sold copies in the US, Australia, Netherlands, Germany, Slovenia, Luxembourg, Finland, Spain, Estonia, even China – a lot of these will be to Welsh expatriates of course, but the response from the Tolkien fan community has been really brilliant too.”

Having looked at Google Lens translation, it was a good decision not to use that to translate to Welsh🤣
