I was able to recently pick up an advance uncorrected proof of the US 1977 Houghton Mifflin book “Tolkien: A Biography” by Humphrey Carpenter.
The proof is in paper wrappers with a paste-down on the inside front cover indicating the probable pricing and release date.
Additionally, the book came with a letter from Houghton Mifflin (which I assume was distributed with this copy) giving some background information.
