Probably the same article appears in Orcrist #7 (1972-73). I don't have a copy of that issue of Orcrist right now, unfortunately. A citation refers to the Orcrist article as her dissertation "epitomized in" the Orcrist article, so it is probably rewritten for a wider audience. Sorry for the long link! Unfortunately, this issue of MYTHLORE falls among those I still have inaccessibly boxed away. But if this person is looking for a copy, he needs to be warned that this issue is NOT #15 but part of VOLUME 15. The issue he's looking for would be somewhere around #56.
I do have a copy of the dissertation, though in rather battered condition, and so could provide a copy of specific pages or passages if he can't find one for himself; I believe Marquette and probably Wheaton have copies as well. And since the dissertation was for a degree granted at the University of Southern California, there shd be a copy on file there as well.
At least one important excerpt from this dissertation has been published as an essay: "Gollum's Character Transformation in The Hobbit", which lays out the changes between the first and second editions of the Gollum-scene in parallel columns. It appears in Lobdell's A TOLKIEN COMPASS (both the original 1975 edition and the truncated 2003 re-issue).

I do see Marquette has it listed in their archives. I can dig into the USC more if that will help. I will check my Mythlore Index tonight as well to see what issue the article appears in.

Without checking the full index for the exact issue of the article, if your citation is correct (Volume 15, Spring 1989) then you want Issue #57 (15:3), also $3.50 as a back issue.

The index confirms it is in issue #57, pp. 4-10. From the Index summary p. 21 (still haven't seen the full article):

Asserts that "The Hobbit, differing greatly in tone, is nonetheless a retelling of the incidents that comprise the plot and the digressions in both parts of Beowulf."

However, his retelling is from a Christian point of view.

The dissertation is more than 200 pp. long. I sent you a separate email on the dissertation, which is obtainable through ProQuest with a subscription.
