So cranky about this latest mckellen flip on ebay. It sold for 2k US via Peter Harrington last week, order cancelled only for the buyer to now flip for 10x the price.
I think you were lucky the order was cancelled. A destroyed 1946 Hobbit - just my humble opinion....

I agree - I think a bullet was dodged here. An early Hobbit is not improved at all by that kind of sketching. I'm also unsurprised by the particular seller that is trying to flip this. I doubt anyone will be interested in it at anything close to that price.
More childish scribbles added to the book, why did they not use a new paperback instead of a book like this. Very sad.

Didn't know this thread existed, but I've got one to add! I bought this book for under $160 on Abebooks a few months ago, only to have my order cancelled. Here it is now on eBay for nearly 10x that price. Still irritates me.
Can't imagine it'll sell at that price.ǽc ælf wrote:

Not with the missing front flap. A similar copy sold on Oxfam three weeks or so back for £400 (sold very quickly, mind -- was about an hour between me seeing it and it being sold). I don't think it was the same copy as the Oxfam one didn't have the front flap missing.
