I did not know it was originally red. Was only the first state red? When did it change to green?

Most Easton Press books (Tolkien and non-Tolkien) don’t change colors this drastically between printings. Easton likes to bring volumes in and out of print to create the illusion of limitation, changes to the volumes when this happen can sometimes create multiple states. Most of the time the changes are small, for example older LOTR and Hobbit printings are slightly larger and darker green than the ones currently available. Hence them being assigned different states. The FoA is one of those more unusual times where EP made a rather large change to a volume. Going from Red to Green when it brought it back into print last year.

I suspect that the red FoA had a single printing as they seem to print a batch, sell it out and then it (generally) comes back at some later date after a period of unavailability. When I was paying attention to these, after dropping off their website, I didn't ever see it come back until the green version. Of course, I could have missed it, and they could technically have printed it multiple times before it initially went off sale. It is a pity EP are so murky with their printing information. I have the red state, which I bought when it came out. I haven't purchased any EP since Beowulf which came out the year after, but I keep half an eye on them. I wonder if Beowulf will go green instead of blue.
