We seem to be getting contradictory information from HarperCollins on this, I have contacted them about this for clarification.

I wonder if it will be genuinely different or will be like the AL signed 500 copy Perilous Realm deluxe that got a signature and a different paper insert, but was otherwise identical. That's the last time I can remember dual ISBNs used like this.

I agree, I think they will reserve a number of copies which will be signed by Alan.

Worth saying that the copyright page of Deluxe TftPR says 'signed edition' alongside the specific ISBN to that edition.
On the 2024 LotR Deluxe, we have 'signed *limited* edition', which might makes a difference.
That said, TftPR was also limited to 500 copies, but I don't think - I was not into collecting at the time - it was advertised as such by the publisher in 2008, but I might be wrong.

It was advertised as being a signed 500 copy edition and only sold through the tolkien.co.uk website. The paper insert didn't mention any limitation though, just "This edition personally signed by Alan Lee". HarperCollins stated it would be numbered, but then it wasn't actually numbered.

Just received my copy from Target (they had a nice sale).

I ordered 2 (one as a gift, one for myself). One of the sets was heavily damaged in transit (bent box and scuffed spine) and the other one had a production issue: the leather spine is too long at the bottom of The Two Towers (longer than the cloth front and back covers) and gets bent as a result.

How often are we seeing defects for this set? Would you keep it or get it replaced?

My main worry is that the rest of the set looks stellar and I am concerned about getting something worse next.

Our advice is always to initiate a return/refund if you are not happy with the item you receive from the seller/publisher.

“Our Tolkien team have advised we had hoped to do a simultaneous signed edition, but unfortunately plans had to be changed after this went to press.”

An altogether more disappointing email this morning from the same person at HC
“ The plans had to be changed, there will be no signed edition”

Maybe the edition has sold better so far than they'd predicted and holding back some for this doesn't make sense economically.
