Folio are making a whole new batch of these Hobbits. I'm strongly suspecting it is a *lot* of them. They will then will be collecting the defective copies (presumably to be destroyed and avoid them finding their way onto the secondary market).

The late Stu, has this been announced or indicated in perhaps an email from Folio? Or is this based upon your observations or ? I am just curious as to whether there is something official on how they will manage defective books.

Email from Folio. Essentially the same email has been received by those I have spoken to with similarly defective copies, but I have no indication of how many are being made, just that it is "some" (but I suspect quite a lot comparatively speaking). I don't buy the reason for the existing copy being returned -- The reason given doesn't really make sense.

"....The text signatures, leather and other materials are on their way to Vicenza now and we are asking Alan Lee (very nicely) to re-sign and number the book. Our own in-house team will oversee the quality checking and will have the new edition despatched to you with express shipping as soon as it’s ready. We don’t have an exact date for despatch yet, but L.E.G.O. are working on this as a priority, and we hope to have the book with you very soon. Once it has arrived, we can arrange collection of the damaged copy, so that our team can fully investigate what has gone wrong here and prevent similar problems in the future."

I will say that they were quick to respond. It was within 24 hours of me sending them the pictures of my copy.

Edit: I should say I do know copies that were replaced from initial spare stock (and I also know that at least some of those were subsequently rejected by the buyer for the same reasons as the original copies).

Thanks!

I would be curious as to what the tally will be on the number defective books. And to see how they will manage the numbering (I assume the replacement will have the same number as the defect).

With my faulty LoTR set, the replacement got the same number as the one I returned. That's going to be the case here as well.

Well, they probably do have to look at the defective copies, spreadsheet out the defects, and bucket them in to the process/build flow. At least see where things did go sideways in the publishing/packaging/shipping. And where is better QA required.

I think in most cases they wouldn't see anything that they can't see from the photographic evidence necessary to get a replacement. I think they need to keep these poor quality ones out of circulation to maintain the limitation and avoid reputational damage more than anything.
