1st Ballantine Hobbit

A lot of collectors are aware that Professor Tolkien was not happy with the lion on the cover of the first printings of the Ballantine paperback edition of The Hobbit (although he didn't see to mind the Emus).

It is interesting to note, whoever did the artwork also took the opportunity to thicken up the foliage in the trees in the surrounding landscape.

One can't help but wonder if this was done in response to the author's wishes, or perhaps the artist just decided to enhance things a bit.

Barbara Remington created the cover art for these early Ballantine volumes

You are correct. It makes sense that she was the artist who made the alterations.
