So cool to see such a diverse collection!northman wrote:
thanks guys!
I’m also very envious of your 50th anniversary box set, as I have been looking for one for ages with no success.
Some stuff to arrive in the last months:
- Grafton first impression centenary Silmarillion PB printed in Australia 1991. First centenary edition?
- 1968 first impression LotR with publishers brochure. From George Bixbys collection of advanced reading copies and courtesy copies.
- Letter from Father Christmas pre-publication mock-up.
- First welsh edition of the hobbit
- First impressions of the first latin and estonian editions of the hobbit
- 4th edition, third impression hobbit 1982
- HoME limited deluxes
- Centenary hardback silmarillion, third impression
- new belarussian edition of the fellowship of the ring and the two towers.
- various polish amber editions: the 2001-2002 3 volume Alan Lee illustrated Lord of the Rings, 2 unfinished tales (garland cover from 2002 and Howe cover from 2005) and a silmarillion from 2004
- publishers slip from the polish 3 volume lord of the rings above
- Atlantis edition UT in polish from 1994, 2 more amber edition silmarillions in polish - 2002 and 2001. The share volume of relatively well-made hardbacks over a handful of years in poland is incredible.
- first impression of the 1984 one-volume lord of the rings in norwegian. I have never seen this in unfaded condition before and was absolutely thrilled to find it.

Very nice books northman, especially the polish jacketed editions.
Could you show more of the Letters from Father Christmas 'mock-up' ?

The little GA&U Lord of the Rings flyer is the treasure in there for me. I picked up another flyer last month (but I don't have that one!). This one is waiting for my folks to bring over from the UK.
Sorry to sneak into your thread #sorrynotsorry

Thank you for the pictures northman ! Very nice and cool item
The recent acquisitions thread remains a favorite of mine and it has been inspirational to see what other collectors here have found towards the end of 2024. I have been on the verge of posting my end of the year finds a couple of times only to have been beat to it and then figured it's nice to have the community enjoy updates from one collection a few days before adding another. Emiliens superb findings were the last such instance. Anyway here are some recent acquisitions of mine I would like to share:
picture 1: various reviews of LotR, Tree and Leaf, Adventures of Tom Bombadil and Unfinished Tales. Huge thanks to PredictableMatt.
Picture 2: First Finnish Hobbit, Sauron defeated (completed my Garland covers), Oxford Poetry 1914-1916, Finn and Hengest first edition (GAU) with a blessedly unfaded spine. The latter purchase the result of the embarassing discovery that my Finn and Hengest (which i have had for ages) was a US edition that for some reason had registered as GAU in my database and my (increasingly faulty) memory.
Pictures 3-4: Finally found a first printing Baynes map of middle-earth from 1970 in great condition and priced sensibly. Printed in the US which was a new variant to me.
Picture 5: Children of Hurin promotary poster and bookmarks.
Pictures 6-9: A signed print of 'Caradhras' by Paul Raymond Gregory. Published by the Tolkien Society (one of 2 prints published before their relationship deteriorated). Malcolm Lindley had a few of these for sale - a beautiful piece.
Picture 10: The Scotsman from 9th March 1939 with a short piece about the 11th Andrew Lang lecture, delivered by Tolkien the previous evening.
Picture 11: The J J R Tolkien Centenary Conference 'souvenir book'. One of 550 copies. It came with a few nice extras: an exhibition catalogue from the 'inhouse exhibition' and a few flyers from the talks and papers given by Dr. Glorian St. Clair.
Picture 12: Proceedings of the J.R.R. Tolkien Centenary Conference, Oxford, 1992. One of the Hardbacks made (the later variant without DJ) of this bibliographically important publication. Not sure how many of these were made but a rare sight.
Pictures 13-14: 'The Art of the Lord of the Rings' and 'The art of the Hobbit'. New editions signed by Wayne and Cristina...2 of the copies sold by Shelley and Son.
Picture 15: Parma Eldalieva Special 3, Tolkien Studies vols 6 and 8 (so close to complete)
Picture 16: The Cuban edition of The Lord of the Rings from 1990. This is a really hard edition to find and the process made me a new good friend - a fellow tolkienite on Cuba. This really is the best part of collecting Tolkien. Only the Hobbit and LoTR got their own cuban editions because the cuban goverment ended up with a legal dispute with the spanish publisher....no other editions of anything Tolkien have been published on cuba since.
