What is that price? And after 22 bids? I have one, 12th impression, is this one scarce/special????
There's been a decent amount of chatter in regards to this UT version -- and really most of the other's in the similar style as they are all current unavailable at the regular places which has led to speculation that HarperCollins has finally stopped publishing those versions. Personally I think they're just OOS as I can't imagine HC really stopped printing the only non-illustrated, non-deluxe hardcover version of UT; especially when one considers that 1-2 weeks ago the Silmarillion version in this style was also OOS at most retailers and is now back in stock at several of them.

I'm not so sure if it's just OOS. I had some contacts close to HC that notified us when the last print run ran out in Sept 2023, and they haven't been available anywhere online since (only used). They never said it was out of print, but any time we asked when the next batch was, they said it was undetermined. It seems every week there's a post about it either on reddit or facebook that someone is looking for it but can't find it.
It is all very silly. We know lots of these were printed (both foil wrap and ink wrap). I've tried to explain to people that just because you can't go out and buy one at a whim, that doesn't mean it is a rare book - it just means there are lots of them that aren't currently on the market (but they absolutely will be on the market at some point). The current batch of Tolkien collectors is weird - they are totally unwilling to accept simple realities like this, and if they can't buy something right this minute, it must be rare.

Agreed 100%, lack of patience combined with lack of knowledge usually leads to outcomes like this.
