Unwin paperbacks 1977 impressions, special slipcase editions. Scuffing to spines, but books are stiff, unread. I've never seen one of these before and I sell a lot of Tolkien. It must be rare! A must for any complete collection. As far as we know this is the only known printing of the story- The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth.

No it is not. It is also printed in Essays and Studies by Members of the English Association(1953), and most paperback copies (EDIT published after 1976) of Tree and Leaf

And then there is the misprint copy of "Black and White Ogre Country" that he has listed for GBP 125.

"Gilt on book spine is double stamped, a rare misprint"

Last time I looked, misprints do not add to the value of a book. We aren't talking rare stamps here...

I don't think that's so - is it? Tree and Leaf was traditionally only LBN and OFS, until 1988 when Mythopoeia was added (and I'm not sure if it still is included, nowadays).

Beorhtnoth appears inThe Tolkien Reader; and also 'Poems and Stories'. I have a Harper Collins ed; with an Alan Lee illo on the dustwrapper. My favourite versions of Beorhtnoth are to be found in Essays and Studies 1953, and a 'special' - that is, a booklet pub. by Anglo-Saxon books in 1991 to commemorate the 1000th anniversary of the Battle of Maldon. (bet Mr. Faith hasn't seen or heard of one of these, either). I bought that at the Tolkien Centenary Conference, held at Keble College Oxford in August '92. where we delegates received as a gift from Christopher a tape recording of Beorhtnoth read by JRR, with CT reading 'Beorhtnoth's Death' and 'Ofermod'.

And there's a special place in my heart for the de luxe Poems and Stories, ill. by Pauline Baynes with two-colour illustrations. Beautiful.

p.s. I also have a set like the one Faith is selling; in very tidy condition.

Sorry for the double post - back to Mr Faith. He really needs to invest in a copy of Hammond, if he wants to be taken seriously. trouble is, he's one of these know-alls who thinks he doesn't have to be told anything.

The sad thing is, there are folks out there who do follow this man's guidance through Tolkien bibliography, and believe what they read. No-one challenges him. Or if they do, I guess we'd never hear about it - faith has a habit of deleting messages he doesn't like, eg on his page for his ill-starred 'festival' in Wales in 2010.

On the other hand, he might take notice of someone who knows what they're talking about, and in a way that could be worse. I don't correct Faith when he comes out with howlers - for one thing it would take too long, but mainly because I don't want to become his free advisory service.

garm, Beorhtnoth is included in my cheap paperback copy of Tree and Leaf (HarperCollins 2001).

You are right in that it is not in the very early paperback Tree and Leaf paperbacks, but I think it is included in all the UK paperback Tree and Leaf's, published from the 1970's, including the latest copy from HarperCollins.
