PermaBound Ballantine Lord of the Rings

Is anyone familiar with hardback (PermaBound) issues of the Ballantine Lord of the Rings. I had someone with a question about them and I have no info to give them. I always thought the PermaBound books were paperbacks that had been turned into hardbound books for library use. Any info would be appreciated.

You are correct. One of the primary functions provided by Perma-Bound was to take paperback books and rebind them in hardcover. You can read a bit more about them on their website here:

They are just rebinding a book that already exists, so I don't think they have any copyright issues or have ever needed to ask permission from publishers to do this.
