My 8th grade class had an excerpt from The Hobbit in one of our books. The riddle contest between Bilbo and Gollum was the cut chosen.
One of the programs for the second form (8 years old) in Russia included an excerpt from The Hobbit which was criticized by some parents. I give a link to the critical post because it contains photos of the schoolbook. I do not share the ideas of the critic. https://kurush1.livejournal.com/143073.html

That's very interesting, thank you!

Many thanks. I had not seen this one before. Very interesting.
Here is a photo of the covers - I could not find in the link provided.

Just wondering which book you are referring to? Is it this one published in Russia in 2008?

Is this the 3rd one?zionius wrote:

Remy, no, your book is for those (of any age but presumably older) who learn English, and it is not a school textbook. The textbook for the 2nd grade contains only translated texts, as we see from the contents page, in the same section with the ‘Spiders and Flies’ (i.e. chapter ‘Flies and Spiders’) there are a Dutch folk song Sea trip, excerpts from Tove Jansson’s ;The Wizard's Hat’, from ‘Karlsson-on-the-Roof’ by Astrid Lindgren, and Italian ‘Cipollino’ by Gianni Rodari, from Milne’s ‘Winnie-the-Pooh’, and some songs from the Soviet cartoon about Winnie the Pooh. They also included the fragment about the people of Hobbits and the first ‘Song of the Dwarves’. There are folk tales from Lithuania, Kyrgyzstan and Dagestan, as well as fragments.
I've added some low resolution images of pages with illustrations from The Hobbit as well as from some other fairy-tales.

Remy, I am sorry, I thought you were answering about the school textbook, and you were discussing another one.
