I've laughed at that every time I run across it. Classic mistake of "I saw it listed on Amazon for ridiculous high price and now it isn't there any more, so someone must have paid that." It is a scarce publication, in the sense that there are very few copies out there, but concurrently there are very few people looking for a copy - probably fewer people than there are extant copies. Personally I would value it in the tens of pounds.
This Hobbit is in rough shape, and it's been bid up over $100, I was keen to bid at about $50. But if someone else wants to dive in, be my guest.
