Mad that this sold for this price. I paid about£200$170 for my copy (in better condition) two years ago.
If someone pays so much for an item, I would say they're a serious collector. And if they're a serious collector, I'd imagine they'd read this forum.
Honestly a serious collector might pay big money, but only for a fine copy in a fine jacket. That was bought by someone who didn't know any better (even in today's inflated market).
Children's Book Club Hobbit

Seems a bit (very, very) steep for a copy lacking the jacket...

Is this really worth all this money? Very curious to know your expert opinions.
Don't think so - especially with flaws.
However, I did sell a duplicate last year for $1150 (but it was in very good condition without any real flaw).
I have seen a couple sell in the $1000 price range and a couple with very high asking prices up to $2000. A few years ago they were generally selling under $400 - Having said all that - a relatively small sample size.

Very strange listing, it is a 1942 GA&U Hobbit and it looks like they have taken the cover from the facsimile Hobbit and chopped the top off to make it fit. No pictures of the book.

This seller has been trying to sell this for a while, with the incompetently cut down facsimile 1st jacket. They have never shown any actual pictures of the book itself, so I think we can make some solid guesses about the condition...
Odd that there are no pictures of the book, as you note, as this is from a very reputable dealer, although I have noticed that ABE listings often do not show as many photos. It is also recased and listed as a third edition.
