My Uncle was visiting an Imperial War Museum exhibit in the UK and noticed this picture painted by Sir William Orpen in 1917, called "German Planes visiting Cassel".
What looks like clouds in the sky are anti-aircraft fire from the ground against the German planes.
I wonder if Tolkien saw the picture at any point, it certainly bears a strong resemblance to the colour version of The Hill?
