German Planes visiting Cassel by Sir William Orpen

My Uncle was visiting an Imperial War Museum exhibit in the UK and noticed this picture painted by Sir William Orpen in 1917, called "German Planes visiting Cassel".

What looks like clouds in the sky are anti-aircraft fire from the ground against the German planes.

I wonder if Tolkien saw the picture at any point, it certainly bears a strong resemblance to the colour version of The Hill?

Very interesting indeed. I was reading his writing about France in 1917, really interesting, more can be read here http://www.gutenberg.org/files/20215/20215-h/20215-h.htm the b&w of your picture is in it too.

This view out of my lounge window always reminds me of "The Hill", especially late spring, when everything is green.

Well, except for the mountains behind...
