Any thoughts on these? It seems to be a licensed edition printed in Taiwan 1972 by Bookcase shop. Reasonable with $24 for each?

Missing Dustjackets.

Here is a link with pictures of the LOTR, Hobbit and Silmarillion.

There was also a pirate edition of these books.

What distinguishes the pirate edition?

Thanks remy. So if these editions don't mention 'Bookcase Shop', they are pirated. Is that so?

Here are some pictures of my 1st (official) printing of the Taiwanese LotR.

Btw if someone should be interested in these books please let me know. I want to focus on UK and German editions.

Other than the books themselves, does anyone have any evidence that any of these copies are official or not?

From Hammond's Bibliography, p. 138 "In 1972 A5e was reprinted by Bookcase Shop, Taipei, under license by George Allen & Unwin, in three volumes."

I find it interesting that Bookcase Shop decided to use the Houghton Mifflin style dustjacket though - I wonder if they also licensed that, which GA&U might not have had the rights to?

My LOTR 3 Vol Set has a slightly different copyright page to Laurin's

It states that it is an authorised taiwan edition reprinted by permission of the publisher.
It also states "Fourth Printing 1976"

It is stamped "George Allen & Unwin" and "Bookcase Shop" on the Title Page.

I am unclear what the "Pirate" edition looks like.

I have a Pirate Silmarillion which has the HMCO DJ (as opposed to what I believe to be the "authorised" edition with the GA&U DJ)

I also have 2 Hobbits -

One with authorised statement on copyright page, Fourth Printing 1976 and stamped "George Allen & Unwin" and "Bookcase Shop" on title page

The other - no authorised statement - First Printing 1972 and stamped "George Allen & Unwin" and "Bookcase Shop" on title page

Not sure if both are authorised or one is a pirate.

As clear as mud.....

These are the strange and interesting editions that can make collecting fun! I don't have these (as you have to draw the line somewhere), but have often thought I might like to.
