Smith having received Tolkien's letter of 12-13 AugustCarpenter #5: Letter from J.R.R. Tolkien to G. B. Smith • 12 August 1916 (#5)[1] replies disagreeing with Tolkien's notion that the T.C.B.S. has ended with Gilson's death. He also encloses Tolkien's letter with "some rather curt and perhaps rude comments".
He says that he hoped to see tolkien on 19 August but does not know if he will shake him "by the hand" or take him "by the throat".
They will spend time together on 20, 21, and 22 August while their batallions are stationed at the same camp.
