To
John, Michael, Christopher and Priscilla Tolkien
Date
Christmas Eve 1930
Type
Father Christmas Letter
Transcript
Complete
Father Christmas writes to the Tolkien children saying that he "enjoyed" all their letters. He has had no time and only finished the letter on Christmas Eve. He hopes that they will enjoy their stockings. He remarks that PB had been ill with Whooping cough and could not help with the packing. FC would not want any children catching it end up "barked like bears on Boxing-day."

FC talks about this years pictures, including him finding Polar Bear in the snow. He closes with mention that he would to say more "about my green brother and my father, old Grandfather Yule, and why we were both called Nicholas after the Saint" but he is late. He sends the children kisses.

In 'Toward an Annotated Father Christmas' Ian Hollenbaugh further notes the following details:
Though there is no envelope reproduced for Christmas 1930, the Tolkiens now reside at 20 Northmoor Road, Oxford, having moved from 22 Northmoor Road (where they had lived for four years) to the larger house next door at the beginning of the year (Biography, p. 181), on 14 January 1930.
