To
Priscilla Tolkien
Date

Type
Father Christmas Letter
Transcript
Complete
Father Christmas writing to Priscilla is glad she sent him two letters. He hopes that her "Bingo family"Priscilla's various teddy bears.[1] have a "jolly Christmas". He remarks that he is very busy, and things are "difficult this year owing to this horrible war." Many messengers have not returned this year.

He has not had time to do her a "very nice" drawing, but he does include one that shows him returning down the path with Polar Bear following behind. He says that there have not been any adventures, "and nothing funny" happened, which he says is because Polar Bear has not helped with anything.

FC says that Polar Bear drew the trees, to which PB adds a footnote that it is the best part.

Priscilla recalls that she "must have been about ten when I realised that the letters were written by my father and that there was no Father Christmas". She remarks that "there was a friendly conspiracy of silence in the family and the older ones kept quiet because they enjoyed it all so much themselves."Over 21, December 1976.
