I do like this set of the first edition Lord of the Rings, this was the first set of first edition Lord of the Rings that I bought.

You should be able to get nice copies with good dust-jackets for less than £300.

Seriously gilraen, do not buy a 2nd/2nd LR set for £299 --this is way, way, way overpriced. You shouldn't be looking to pay over £75 for this set. I mean, who does it appeal to? It only really appeals to collectors. I wouldn't even pay half (£150) for a 2nd/1st set. Hell, I bought a lovely 1962 GA&U slipcased set for less than £300.

I agree with Totter that the RU LR is a nice set. But, again, £300 (--or even near this price)!? This is quite a bit above market value. Jacketed sets aren't even going for £200.

You need to aim much higher!

1950's LR?
Full leather?
Oh, also: is your name Gilraen Bullock?
Even better...

Book Description: Allen & Unwin, London, 1956. Full-Leather. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. This is an early 1st edition (5th, 5th, 4th impressions, ie 1956,1957, 1958) set fully rebound in dark maroon leather. Each book containe the neat inscription 'Bullock 1959'., The Fellowship does not have a map, There is a long tear to the paper of the map in The Two Towers but it doesn't impinge on to the actual map. Clean interiors. Each book has a gilt ring on the front board. Each spine contains the title The Fellowship of the Ring, then Tolkien, then Part 1, Part II, and Part III respectively. The top edge of the first book is gilt, the other two books have all edges gilt. Some marks to the leather covers. . A slightly oddly-produced one-off rebind but it's an early edition, and being full leather they feel comfortable in the hand and they have that distinctive leather smell to them. Will provide pictures if desired. Ignore Abe's postage quote - postage at cost. All my books are from my own private collection. I offer a full refund for any books that do not match my description.
Lord of the Rings (Abebooks)
Published by Allen & Unwin, London , 1956

Yours for £300!

DISCLAIMER: If anything you buy, that I suggest, turns out to be utter crap, then it ain't my fault...

Agreed, I paid 125(isn) for my jacketed set of RU last year (or maybe the year before -- can't remember). I would have thought decent condition with reasonable condition jackets should be no more than 100-150, to be honest, depending on the condition.

Thanks chaps, good advice. Unfortunately not Gilraen Bullock...
Was taken with the 2,2 set as it was my birth year... and can't stretch to 1,1's ! Will go back to the wish list and see what I was really wanting last time I wrote it down.
Always fun spending someone else's money !

Indeed. If you're having difficulties (spending someone else's money), I could certainly spend it for you/them...
