Did anyone here buy this? The TS library bookplate was what really interested me about this auction; it's not something I've seen before. Not interesting enough to pay £40 for it though...

Saw it before it sold.
Toyed with the idea of buying. Would have if the dustjacket was in better condition.
In the end, I decided to put in a best offer (which I did) but it sold soon after.
Interesting enough though.

That's basically exactly what happened to me. I'm pretty fickle about DJ condition & the photos provided no evidence that this was a decent copy. Plus, £40?! Too much.

Interested indeed !
Been after an advance copy of the Sil for ages and so throw in the interesting book plate as well - too good to resist.
Ok cover not great but when all said and done its exactly the same as a Billings copy which will cost extra £5 tops if I want to change it.
I really wouldn't like to lose a book trying to get £10 or £20 off the price if you want it. I can only recall seeing 1-2 of these in years and have never seen a Tolkien library bookplate therefore £40 good value in my eyes.
Need to do a little research on it so if anyone has any ideas would welcome it.
Did the Tolkien Society have a library somewhere in 1977 ?
or
Has someone just made this up and in which case why?
You see hours of entertainment for £40 !

Completely agree. But that was why I put in a best offer. I didn't want it enough. If I had "really wanted" it, I would of course used the BIN.
Congrats on purchase. And indeed, I too have only seen a few advance copies over the years.
There was a review copy, clearly photographed, & (I'm guessing) in better condition, that went on eBay in early August for £20...

I asked Charles Noad about this and he thinks it was by the same lady artist who did a cover illustration for his 1977 Tolkien Society booklet 'The Trees, The Jewels, and the Rings'. Charles is trying to find her name.
