Dear All,
my name is Gastone and I'm from Switzerland. I'm new in the forum.
First if all I want to apologize about my English, I try to do my best but I write (and maybe also I speak) very bad.
In the lasts days I found the books written in the subject in a old box in my grandpa's house. He's passed away since 8 months and I never knew that he was a Tolkien's fan.
I don't want to sell the books, but I'm anyway interested to know if those books had a value.
Someone can help me please? The books are in good conditions a little bit faded and with the name of the old owner written inside.
Thanks in advance to all.
Kind regards,
Gas.

Welcome to the forum.
The books that you have are UK first editions of the Lord of the Rings, but later impressions.
I would value them at between £100-£200 GBP, depending largely on the dust wrapper condition and if they are price-clipped.
If they don't have dust wrappers then no more than £50 GBP.

Thanks for the answer.
The books are in very good condition but there is something strange with the dust jacket.
The books are 5th, 4th and 3th impression, but on the dust jacket is indicate 6th, 3th and 3th.
It's very strange.
What you mean with "price clipped"?
Thanks in advance.
G.

Thanks for the link Trotter. Now it's clear the concept of "price-clipped". ;)
About the dust jacket you also know why is fairly common to find non matching books and dust jacket?
Thanks a lot for your help.
Anyway I will keep those books in my little collection.

Out of interest are your copies price-clipped?
As regards impression numbers on the dust-jackets, Tolkien's publisher GA&U would use up any printed dust-jackets that they had available, did not care that the impression number may be different to the impression in the book.
I have wondered for a long time, why they sometimes printed the impression number on the dust-jackets at all?

FR and TT are price clipped, ROTK is not.
This thing about not matching dust jacket it's very strange, as you said it's not difficult print books and dust jacket at the same time.
You have some precious books?
