So this made me go looking....
Interview with Bruce Dickinson, lead singer of Iron Maiden3. FAVORITE BOOKS HE NEVER WROTE A SONG about : The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien "We just thought it's such a huge book that it would be silly to write a song about it. It's almost as daft as imagining you could make a movie out of it. Though, of course, someone did that rather well."
And although they didn't write any songs based on Tolkien, they did one for C.S. Lewis...
Iron Maiden - World's most literary band8. Iron Maiden - "Out of the Silent Planet" It was always considered cool, for some bizarre reason, to pay tribute to Tolkien and The Lord of the Rings, but how many songs can you name based on the works of C.S. Lewis? Nobody's exactly tripping over themselves to write about Narnia, are they? Except Iron Maiden made this little ditty in tribute to the first novel in C.S. Lewis' "Space Trilogy."

Thanks for that, Probably my favorite band, and probably the sort of music orcs listen to haha.
Do you like them?
I think for the real creative bands it's natural to take elements from Tolkien, C.S Lewis wouldn't have come to mind though.
The last tribute song they did was for Robin Williams, Tears of the Clown.
All the bands that have borrowed or paid tribute to Tolkien, I wonder what he would have thought of their music, what kind of music did JRRT like I wonder....

Given how much music has been inspired by (or pays tribute to) Tolkien, I think it is fair to say that he would have liked some of it, and not at all liked others. (I think you could say this of almost any human!)
http://www.tolkien-music.com/There have been papers on Tolkien and music (what he liked). I don't have any references handy though.
