That's very odd, the third impression that was for sale is now a 4th impression with a third jacket. The seller must have has sold the book without the jacket and then moved the jacket onto his 4th (Edit: Yep, checked - definitely the 4th he had for sale last week, same stains)
Bizarre. Seems odd someone would be more interested in tracking down the book itself, rather than the jacket, given the books are far more common than the jackets (even a tatty specimen like this is better than no jacket).
I agree, don't know why someone would buy the 3rd impression and not want the dust jacket as well. 3rd impression dust jackets do seem to be quite a lot scarcer than 4th impressions referenced from issue numbers. From tolkienbooks.net, 1500 3rd impression dust-jackets and 4000 4th impression dust jackets.
The dust jacket text also seems to have been reset between the 3rd and 4th printings, an extra comma appears after "elves," on the 4th impression "elves,,"

Yeah, as we discussed before, lots of minor alterations to the typesetting between the two. The other notable difference between the 1942 and 1946 (which you might remember from when I was doing the facsimile), other than the ",," is “magical adventure, and, working up to devastating climax war” [1946] vs “magical adventure, and, working up to a devastating climax war.” [1942]
