From what I've seen via BookDepository and Blackwell's, it appears to be the same size (height, really) as the other 'usual' slipcased editions.

Is the deluxe edition going to be a limited number (Like the Illustrated Hobbit) since there is already a HC deluxe edition of Unfinished Tales? What do y'all think?

Makes me think of those rubbish little mapbooks. I'll be getting the standard edition of this one.

They didn't SAY limited, so I'm guessing it won't be. But, that's not to say that it won't go out of print, though!

Limited means nothing anyway if the book sells well -- Look at the 1997 Deluxe LoTR and 2001 Deluxe Hobbit. Both Limited, until the LoTR got 3 more prints and TH got one more. Only difference - the limitation statement got dropped.

Very true.

There are a few 'loopholes', though I consider an item limited if:

- it flat-out says it in the product description (but I understand what you meant about the earlier ones being reprinted)
- it's actually numbered X/Y

Also above I misunderstood: they said "The Hobbit illustrated edition", which I quickly thought to be the limited edition of the Sketchbooks; but upon re-reading, realized it was the red slipcased edition that Jemima Catlin illustrated. So, yes, I believe this new edition will probably go the same route. Which, as far as I know, only got one printing.

Lol, true...I don't have either of those editions, but would love to have them someday.

I don't think much of it. I think by now the only 'deluxe' that would excite me is something that reproduces manuscript pages.

Standard works for me. I never planned to get any of them but I am glad I got the Hobbit/Rings box and am looking forward to the standard UT.

I'll bet ya they describe this as "sumptuous".

You'd be right
Sumptuous, 40th anniversary collector’s edition of this collection of tales which takes readers further into the stories told in The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion, featuring 18 full-colour paintings depicting scenes from the First, Second and Third Ages of Middle-earth, and housed in a matching illustrated slipcase.
