Over at the World Rugby Museum website is a post that discusses Tolkien's background on the rugby team at King Edward's School (including a rarely shared photograph), and quoting some lines from his poem "The Battle of the Eastern Field".
Don't neglect the first comment as well, where John Garth adds more context and names all of the boys pictures in the photograph.
Enjoy!

If you are a member of the Tolkien Society and have not read the poem "The Battle of the Eastern Field", you can download Mallorn 46 from
https://www.tolkiensociety.org/members-area/ for the whole poem and commentary by Maggie Burns.

You can read the complete poem in Vol 4, no 3 of The Gryphon.
You can't read it in
The Gryphon, because it was never published in
The Gryphon, only in the
King Edward's School Chronicle for February 1911, and reprinted in
Mallorn 12 (1978) and 46 (Autumn 2008). Vol. 4, no. 3 of
The Gryphon will get you 'The Clerke's Compleinte'.

Thank you for the correction. Getting my poems all mixed up there.
