Right Velmeran this craziness needs to stop haha. My poor brain can't cope knowing this is not real and I'm actually considering adding the images as a new cover to digital editions just to have them in place where they belong.
HarperCollins, you have sales right here of a slipped edition housing all the Middle-earth books.

Worthy of mention: The french 'pocket' edition uses John Howe's 'The Doors of Heorot' should you wish to add The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun to the 'black border' style (HoM-e paperbacks) :
Funny this topic should arise as I'm working on my own HoME mockup!
Not to hijack this topic, but I wrote to HC today with a polite suggestion/request to alter the PoD series. It's a long shot, but I still had fun cleaning the volumes up!

Velmeran - Those covers are GORGEOUS. I'm kind of glad they don't exist though, so I'm not forced to shell out for the lot...

That looks fantastic Caudimordax!! And I'm sure there'd be plenty of happy collectors to know that the POD series was carefully matched like this if HC takes up the suggestion.
On a side note, I received a reply from HarperCollins concerning something unrelated and they happened to mention that they were really snowed under right now (not specific to emails/messages, just generally). I'm thinking we might consider giving their inbox a rest for a bit... just a thought
I think there difficulty with the PODs is that they don't really make any money out of them (or that is my understanding). Would obviously be nice if they could address volumes 2 and 7, though. Odd that they didn't notice at the time, but I imagine it was just down to the archive copies that they pulled. Anyone without detailed knowledge of the printing of the series would not have known there were so many variants.
Agree, probably worth giving HC a break from the email stream, especially as they do seem to generally put quite a bit of effort into the replies. All part of the job, of course, but given COVID I imagine that like the rest of us they are facing challenges that are outside the norm!
I still want them to do my Silmarillion, though That said, one of these days I'll actually typeset it properly using the latest flap text and size it for the current non-illustrated UT and simply print my own copy. Job done.

Yeah, I was careful to impress the point that while these alterations would be nice, I'm overall grateful to have PoD as an option as is. I also assured them they wouldn't hear me sharpening my pitchfork either way. Luckily, this is probably the last email I feel I need to send on the subject! I also agree with Stu that they do take great pains to send meaningful replies, and that's gotta take time. Tried to keep it as respectful as possible!
Caudimordax - Are you saying the before pics are actually what the POD spines look like? If so, my OCD is making me want to claw at someone. ?
