Has anyone acquired the HMH edition yet? I'm curious to know in what respects (if any) it differs from the HC edition, such as paper quality and the like.

I’m in the US and purchased the HC edition to match the illustrated box set I purchased in the summer. While perusing my local B&N, I flipped through the HMH edition. Except for the publisher information, pricing, etc., it appeared to be identical to the HC edition. It was also printed in Italy. Unlike the website descriptions I’ve seen, it seemed to be the same size as the HC edition as well (although I didn’t have the HC edition on me to compare).

Well it can't belong to the usual collector's edition series; as there's already a collector's edition of Unfinished Tales. They made them as distinguishable as possible from each other. Two collector's editions of the same title by the same publisher, the differences need to be obvious to avoid confusion by the lesser-informed.

There is a level of comedic value in so much as the new UT matches as well with the 'deluxe' series as some of the deluxe series :/

Looks like a nice volume. I didn't bite as I only want simple editions now but I like seeing it in people's collections all the same. Deluxe editions don't do it for me personally but the new Alan Lee box, the UT, the latest Father Christmas show that HarperCollins are making an effort to give us decent editions so long may it continue.

I'm not going to go on a rant here, but suffice to say, some members here may be familiar with my stance of the current collector's editions. I would like to say, that I wish the collector's editions offered goodies: think of The Hobbit and The Silmarillion gift boxes. I believe they came out in 1999. The Hobbit was black, and The Silmarillion was grey. Besides the book itself, they came with other goodies such as an audio CD, some prints in postcard-sized format, and the Sibley + Howe maps. I just wished that for the price the collector's editions go for, they come with additional 'stuff.'

However, recently, The Hobbit Facsimile Gift Set and the collector's edition of the illustrated Unfinished Tales have had some good 'stuff' in them. To be honest, for the new Unfinished Tales, I was expecting the collector's edition to have the maps printed on the inside boards, and Numenorean ship artwork as a frontispiece.

Hopefully they'll continue to present additional goodies in a similar manner for future collector's editions I have a great idea for a great tales set, though this may not be the place to go into that. I can, if requested or messaged, though

I personally get frustrated by gift editions. I like books, CDs and art. I don't especially like them cobbled together. Of course that is entirely subjective but when the Hobbit facsimile gift edition was released I was thoroughly annoyed that they included (no matter how minor) primary unpublished text as bait to a box that otherwise was fairly uninteresting. So I would prefer that gift sets were left off the table of releases.

I would actually like to hear your thoughts about a Great Tales box but maybe better as a PM.

I would also like to hear your Great Tales idea. Even the wildest speculation interests me.
