Thank the lord of the land of Wallet
Hey Earl hope you are safe and well. I will get across and reply to my emails in the near century
I’m well and hope you are too. ?
Haha yes indeed. The wallet is the issue for me - otherwise these books would have been eye candy on MY shelf. ?
Your zipped mouth says it all - We all know perfectly well that it is a Silmarillion with some extra new art thrown in. My personal guess is that it will be one artist, not three, but happy to be proven wrong!
I think it'll be the illustrated edition by Ted Nasmith, in the format that matches this year's illustrated editions of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and Unfinished Tales.
You're both right :

We are delighted to unveil the cover of the new illustrated edition of The Silmarillion, featuring a dramatic painting by Ted Nasmith depicting the fall of Númenor. This new edition will be published in March 2021 in time for Tolkien Reading Day and will feature new paintings appearing here for the first time.

It's an amazing illustration, but the Akallabeth is a relatively minor part of the text as a whole. Kind of wish they went with a little less flash and bang in favor of something more representative of the First Age. But hey, at least it's got ships.
So we know that some illustrations will be new !

"Also included is a letter by J.R.R. Tolkien written in 1951 which provides a brilliant exposition of the earlier Ages, and almost 50 full-colour paintings by Ted Nasmith, including some which appear here for the first time."
As the previous hardback edition was having 45 illustrations. So we should have 4 or 5 brand new ones in this edition. Unless some would be removed an more new ones included...

The Silmarillion is the core of J.R.R. Tolkien’s imaginative writing, a collection of narratives ranging in time from the Elder Days of Middle-earth, through the Second Age and the rise of Sauron, to the end of the War of the Ring.
This brand new fully illustrated edition includes almost 50 full-colour paintings, and pencil drawings, by acclaimed artist Ted Nasmith, and arrives 18th March 2021.

I'm willing to bet the cover choice has something to do with the new Amazon show which will be set largely in the Second Age. Perhaps trying to capture some of the excitement and anticipation around the show.
But ya, I would have liked another cover, especially since the new Unfinished Tales has a similar cover in both theme and time period.

I can definitely buy your logic here. And hey, if it sells more books, right?
