I'm not baffled by the discussion, but I am increasingly baffled by the conclusions being drawn.
Choosing an illustration that hadn't been used for a cover before would most definitely have interested me more than this design. Plus the colour scheme is too similar to the 1998 edition.

There's been quite a few tidbits about the Amazon show made public that make it pretty clear that the focus will encompass Númenórean ships/sailing right out of the gate. I would not be at all surprised if the series (or trailers for it) hit right around March 25th next year based on the same trickle of information. As the publishers just did Unfinished Tales with the ship cover theme, it makes perfect sense to have The Silmarillion with a similar theme bright and fresh on the shelves right when the marketing effort for the TV show is peaking.
I fully expect Lego Númenórean ships and Fisher Price Little People and all the rest, too, but those will likely wait until the first season hits Amazon Prime. ?

The 8 year old in me really likes this. The 39 year old is not too unhappy at the thought either

Better snap up your sets fast! Never know, those first-run Anatar and Gil Galad minifigs may fetch a pretty penny on bricklink in 20 years.

Seems to me like they would reuse an image that tonally fits in with Alan Lee's covers, which this does. Ted's style is quite different, so there would be limited images to choose from that would make for a matching cover, plus most of images would already be required internally.
Blackwell's has now listed the new Silmarillion.
Urulókë maybe worth taking the Silmarillion into its own thread? And turning that link to an affiliate one?

The new editions are coming out in March. As long as one pre-orders by Feb latest, their orders should be fulfilled. What I mean is, that since it's a pre-order, it doesn't matter if you order now, or wait a few months - as long as you get the order in with ample opportunity for the publisher to supply retailers with the appropriate amount of copies.
