4,000 is an awful lot of copies. It isn't remotely a small print run and it isn't cheap. I'd expect it to be available for a while yet (and that assumes they don't print more, which I assume they will).

Agreed. From anecdotal reports, people are still getting the first impression at this time but I fully expect that HarperCollins will silently print more when needed, so these will not go out of stock until HC doesn't want to sell them any more.

At this rate, the standard edition's 1st print might be printed in a smaller quantity
... And could become more collectable at the end

Edit : In that regard, it's now OOS on the official website, where the Deluxe Edition is still available.... Just saying

Tolkien 'deluxe' sales are tiny compared to real deluxe. Compare Tolkien to Stephen King for instance.

Take Cemetery Dance's Night Shift from December last year. 3 States (3000 at $95, 750 at $275, and 52 at $1250). Sold out in 2 days. In 2011 they released a 25th anniversary edition of IT (2750 at $125, 750 at $475, and 52 at $2000) sold out in 30 hours.

Tolkien just isn't in the same league.

Well, certainly not any "deluxe" edition from 2004 onwards, that's for sure. The ones that HarperCollins was offering during the '90s, and even right up to 2002, are made MUCH nicer.

There are a lot of casual purchasers. I think the number of collectors willing to pay £60 - £100 for an edition isn't especially large. The number willing to pay over £100 has historically been tiny. I think a lot of the current collecting focus (which seems to quite a hot market) is on earlier pre-HarperCollins editions.

The current deluxe editions are touted as ‘for a limited time’, but 16yrs later they’re still being produced with multiple impressions of most of them. Do you think that with these illustrated, slipcased editions of UT and Sil, that Harper Collins have learnt a lesson by saying that it’s a limited 1st impression of xxxx, so that if they do sell out they can then easily print another batch and not get caught out with the ‘limited time’ tag?
Probably not, but it’s a thought I had. After all, they’re book sellers who want our money!
