Is there any reason at all why this would hold any especial value beyond a typical random conference proceedings (i.e. worth next to nothing)?
It appears to be a rare book, but I can't see any value in it.
The price appears to come from 'rare' and mentions 'Tolkien'.
If someone wants to read it then it is readily available from libraries, https://www.worldcat.org/title/scholar ... rku-finland/oclc/34633224

So same as my limited edition of 12 copies Songs of the Philologists? Will happily accept £5,000 for my copy. :)
The same '54 copy of The Hobbit a couple of weeks apart. Sold for £387 at open auction, dealer now listing for £950 (with a lot less description).
Other than the nice jacket, it is a somewhat nasty copy, and the new listing doesn't show the back of the boards, unlike the fully open and honest original one (so I've included the original picture for posterity).

I thought that book looked familiar. I only glanced at the original listing once so I couldn't place this new one.
Obviously this is way over priced. This seller is clearly trying to pull one over.

And regarding the US copy that's been for sale for a while, I finally got an answer regarding the missing section on the front of the dustjacket...
Let's just say I am skeptical about the response...
"There is a lot of chipping to the DJ. But it is still all of one piece. I had a photo of the complete DJ. But I took it down to accommodate other requests. Thank you for your interest."

They have had a go at repairing the dust-jackets, but not convinced that a very good job has been done
More re the US Hobbit. Funnily enough the seller has not actually re-posted this image that shows that the jacket is magically complete, despite his own pictures showing this not to be the case. Also worth saying, I saw this when it was first posted, and I never saw such an image (the one he states he removed).
I find this one really bizarre, to be honest. I don't get how sellers have decent feedback ratings and then do weirdly clueless stuff like this.
